LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Shakespeare & Wildflower Garden are located on and near the traditional home and meeting place for many Tribal Nations.
The Garden Club of Evanston acknowledges and honors the Three Fires Confederacy -Potawatomi, Odawa, and Ojibwe Nations; Menominee, Ho-Chunk, and the many other Indigenous peoples who call this place home-past, present and future. Today, roughly 35,000 Native people from over 100 tribes live in the Chicago area. There are over 100,000 tribal members in the state of Illinois.
The Garden Club of Evanston makes this acknowledgement as part of our commitment to increase awareness of the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism from which we benefit.
We commit to learning about and honoring the Indigenous peoples who stewarded and continue to steward the lands we have occupied and continue to occupy.
